What are Cataracts?
A cataract is a progressive clouding of the natural lens of the eye. This clouding interferes with light as it passes to your retina. This leads to deterioration in the quality of your vision. Symptoms include the sensation of looking through a piece of wax paper, distortion or dimming of vision and color. This can interfere with your reading and driving. Some forms of cataract, including cortical cataracts, do not cause much effect on reading vision in normal lighting conditions, but with headlights with night driving and trying to read on a bright day these cataracts can lead to significant glare and haloes.
Currently there is no medical treatment to reverse or prevent the development of cataracts. Once they form, the only way to achieve clear vision again, is to physically remove the cataract from your eye.
Advances in Cataract Surgery
No injection surgery
In traditional cataract surgery, a long needle is inserted behind the eye to numb it for surgery. This "retrobulbar" or "peribulbar" injection has a lot of risks, including injury to the eye or the eye muscles and nerves from the needle, bleeding or infection.
Dr. Kaur uses a newer and safer technique with advanced medical drops. In this way, the risks of injecting medication behind the eye with a needle are avoided. In addition, the recovery from surgery can be greatly improved.
No suture surgery
In traditional cataract surgery, a large incision, the size of the whole lens is made in the sclera (white part of the eye). The lens is then removed in one whole piece. Following this, the incision must be closed with multiple stitches. This very large wound may increase the risk of complications, including bleeding and infection. In addition, the sutures can lead to a permanent distortion of vision from irregular astigmatism. After surgery, a patient's activities may also need to be severely restricted to prevent increased pressure in the eye in the setting of a very large and potentially unstable wound.
Dr. Kaur uses the latest surgical techniques and instruments to make microincisions in the cornea (clear part of the eye). These incisions are self-sealing and so no permanent sutures are needed. Some patients may need one temporary suture. This is removed in the office 1 week after surgery and does not result in any astigmatism.
Phacoemulsification
Dr. Kaur does all of her cataract surgeries in only accredited surgery centers or hospitals with the latest cataract surgery equipment. She is trained in the most advanced techniques. These include phacoemulsification, where Dr. Kaur uses ultrasound energy to liquefy the cataract and then remove it through microincisions in the cornea.
Advances in Lenses
After the cataract is removed from your eye, it is replaced by an intraocular lens which helps you see clearly after surgery.
Older lenses are made of hard plastic and must be inserted through a larger wound, which needs to be closed with sutures. Dr. Kaur uses foldable lenses made of the newest lens material of acrylic. These lenses are folded with a special instrument which can be inserted through microincisions in your cornea. This leads to less distortion of the cornea from surgery.
Aspheric premium lenses
Dr. Kaur uses aspheric lenses. These improve contrast sensitivity and have less visual aberrations (distortions in vision), then regular spherical lenses.
Multifocal Premium lenses

Toric Premium lenses
